VAA Visual Arts Alliance 35th Juried Membership Exhibition, October 29th - December 2, 2017
I am very pleased and it is a great honor for me to have two paintings selected by Cindy Lisica for this VAA juried show. There were over 360 works submitted by over ninety artists and Cindy selected forty works for the show. There are some fine works being displayed and it is definitely worth a visit when you are in the area.
Each quarter, Visual Arts Alliance (VAA) hosts professionally-juried art shows as part of the effort to create more opportunities for established and emerging artists alike to connect with the viewing public. On Wednesday, November 8, VAA will host an opening reception for the 35th Juried Membership Exhibition from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with an awards presentation at 7 p.m. This event is the 81st juried exhibition VAA has produced since its founding in 1981. It will be on display from October 30 through December 2 at The Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Second Floor, Houston. Artists, art enthusiasts, collectors, curators, and emerging collectors are invited to attend. For collectors, it is very important to note that VAA takes no commission on sales; all sales are handled directly with the artist.
The exhibition will be juried by Dr. Cindy Lisica, owner and director of Cindy Lisica Gallery. Over the last 15 years, Cindy Lisica has taken her curatorial research and professional work to cities throughout the world. In addition to championing artists' careers through gallery shows, she has worked in museums including The Warhol and the Menil Collection. She regularly presents at international speaking engagements and conferences. As an Asian-American scholar, she continues to teach Art History courses on East Asia, as well as symposiums and guest lectures at museums. She is currently part-time faculty at the University of Houston, where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in the "Art and Architecture of India" and "Modern and Contemporary Asian Art".
Exhibiting artists will have the opportunity to give a short presentation on their work and answer questions from the audience. The artist talk will be Saturday, November 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

What fun this was: I was able to show one of my latest paintings: "Tell me Mr. Pinocchio, Do You Have a King or Shall I Go Fish?". This is one painting in my series "Famous Faces in Unfamiliar Places, With Fish." In this work we find a young Nazi Youth version of Pinocchio (referencing the 1938 release of the Disney movie) playing "go fish" with Richard Nixon and Nixon's Irish Setter King Timahoe. Nixon is asking Pinocchio if he has a king and Pinocchio finds himself conflicted in trying to answer (note his growing nose): we can see Pinocchio is holding three kings in his hand (implying Nixon must have and perhaps is the symbolic King of Spades), but Pinocchio does not have a dog named King and he does not consider Nixon his King. He does not want to answer yes to the question and have to surrender his three Kings (the wise men). The Watergate hotel is out the window, a storm is rising in the painting behind Nixon and there is more - much more. Thank you to our Juror Catherine Anspon of Paper City Magazine for picking me out of the crowd - it truly was an honor to participate!

I painted this piece "All Things Old Are New Again" for my mom on the occasion of her 95th birthday in March of 2017. You may note that both women in the painting are my mother: in the foreground we see her at her current age of 95 and in the background she is seen at age 35 (the year I was born). My mom is quite a character and a role model for me of integrity, joy and resilience and I love her dearly.
Each year the Jung Center of Houston celebrates it's members and their art. I was honored to have three pieces included in this year's show. My wife and I have been members of the Jung Center of Houston for about twenty years and we have enjoyed many outstanding programs and workshops over our time there. Thanks Jung Center of Houston for the great work you do.

Annual Student Exhibition, May 20th through July 23, 2017
Each year students at the Glassell School are invited to submit one piece from their work over the prior year to be considered for inclusion the Annual Student Exhibition. The submissions are juried by a three member panel of the faculty. This show represents works from students across all media disciplines: painting, watercolor, works on paper, collage, life drawing, sculpture, photography, print making and more. This year I received the schools highest honor for works on flat surfaces: the coveted "2D Award" for my acrylic painting "When They Came for Edgar." I was blown away! Thank you Glassell - I am loving my classes, my instructors and my attendance at the school over the last three years has been life changing for me. I will be forever grateful for my time at Glassell and always will treasure this award. You will, however, have to put up with me a bit longer as I plan to continue my classes for a while to come.
Come celebrate the Annual Student Exhibition at this opening reception at the Studio School, 2450 Holcombe. Enjoy light refreshments, and view the juried selection of outstanding student work from all Glassell Studio School departments. The exhibition is on view at the Studio School from May 20 through July 23.
